Console Wars: PS4 Pro, Switch, Xbox One X

The age-old war on what console gaming system is better has raged on for generations now. A war where each side is very passionate and dedicated to their favorite systems. The current battle is between Nintendo Switch, Sony PS4 Pro, and the Microsoft Xbox One X. Who will win the battle this generation? Turns out there is no clear winner, they are all great but each for very different reasons. So how do you choose which one to buy if they are all good? Here are a few key points about each system that will help you in making that choice. After all, “one does not simply walk into Mordor”… at least not without a plan, a powerful ring or this guide.

Nintendo Switch
With record-breaking sales of the Switch, it’s easy to say this is a very popular device. The ability to be a handheld system as well as a shelf sitting console makes it the most versatile and appealing console. When it’s not docked, the battery life is an impressive 2.5-6 hours. The games available for the switch are currently very limited with only 2 or 3 great titles. However, the selection is expanding quickly and they do have the game of the year, Zelda: Breath of the Wild! One downside worth noting is that most streaming apps are not yet available but Nintendo is working on that and Hulu has recently been added. Also, this is the cheapest of the consoles with a price around $250.

PlayStation 4 Pro
Sony, arguably, has the best exclusive titles for the PS4. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Crash Bandicoot, Bloodborne, Persona5 and Last of Us make this system really hard to pass up. Also, this is a very powerful device that is capable of playing Virtual Reality (VR), with additional VR hardware purchase.  For more on VR visit Virtual Reality: Should You Buy It?. PS4 is able to stream 4K movies but at this time is not capable of playing 4K HDR disks. Finally; the controller is amazing, with built-in touch-pad and sound.

Xbox One X
Microsoft has created the most powerful gaming console to-date. In order to wield the full potential of this power, you will need an HDR capable 4K TV. Of course, that with great power comes great… expense so be prepared to spend a little more for that amazing quality. Though I haven’t personally played with this system yet from everything I have seen and heard from friends and online, the screen quality is worth it. Oh, and it’s also worth noting the Xbox One X has a 4K disk player for HDR movies, which none of the other devices have.

The console war still rages on and will likely continue until the end of time. With the current generation’s battle, the choice is even harder. So pick the one that has the qualities you value the most. Do you value cheaper and more portable system, VR capability with great games or perhaps you want the highest quality video graphics available? The choice is yours to make, I just hope this guide helped you in your decision.

  1. Hold up. You claim the Switch only has two or three good games. I would assume you are referring to Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and possibly Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle given your review. Did you somehow miss Splatoon 2, Arms, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Snipperclips, and the release of the Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2 bundle? Also the acclaimed indie exclusive Golf Story?

Also no mention of any upcoming games for any of these systems? Shin Megami Tensei 5, Metroid Prime 4, Kirby Star Allies, and Octopath Traveller for the Switch? Last of Us 2, Death Stranding and Detroit: Become Human for the PS4?

Its also pretty disingenuous to endorse the Xbox One X when the entirety of your experience with it has been through other people or the internet.

Honestly, this sounds like you did only the most basic google search in order to write this. If you’re going to publish information, you may want to actually think about doing some actual in-depth research into your topic. There’s nothing in this post that isn’t in five hundred other blogs.

    LOTR reference? *cringe*

    1. You are definitely correct that Nintendo has increased their number of titles that was very much lacking on launch, especially the indie titles and I am super excited for. I am hoping for a Pokemon game (not tournament) for 2018 as well. I am sorry you felt my thoughts on the Xbox One X was disingenuous, I wanted to be up front and honest as possible that I do not own this system but I have several friends that love it and told me why they love it. But that is why the console wars still wage on, we all love our systems and everyone is very passionate about their favorites.
