Quick Dinner Ideas for Gamers


Cooking dinner at home is one of the best things you can do for yourself, and not just as a gamer. If you need some convincing checking out (Why Gamers Should Cook IRL). Odds are you are here because you do cook and just want a few ideas on some really simple meals that won’t take up too much of your free/gaming time AND isn’t hot pockets, ramen noodles or ravioli out of a can. Here are some super easy, almost cheat code worthy versions of dishes that taste great and are simple to make:

Chicken Curry: Cut up some chicken or use a can of premium chicken, put a packet of Paste for Chicken Curry with water. Follow the instructions on the box for exact details. Then if you have a rice cooker just put your rice and water in the pot and let it cook. If you don’t have a rice cooker you can boil it or buy a microwavable bag of rice. Mix the Chicken Curry with Rice when fully cooked and enjoy. This is a recipe that takes 15-35 minutes, depending on the way you cook your rice.

Jambalaya / Red Beans and Rice with Sausage: Cut up sausage into slices or chunks and put it in the pot with a box of Zatarain's®. Follow the instructions on the box (basically add water and packet). Once you throw the ingredients in the pot you can basically walk away for 10-15 min (or whatever the box says) play a quick round of Hearthstone® Dungeon Run or a quick daily quest in another game, then come back stir, let cool and eat.

Spaghetti and Sauce: Yep old faithful simple recipe. Boil up some spaghetti noodles for about 10 min on the stove, drain and add your favorite jar of sauce. Toss in some meat or pair it with a salad if you want something more filling. It’s that simple and you don’t even have to watch it boil, so more time for other games while you wait. Just don't forget it's on the stove. I strongly recommend using a loud timer to remind you to go back and finish what you started.

Salad: If you need a healthy option pick up a bag of pre-mixed salad blend, spice it up with some cheese, slices of strawberries, mushrooms, peppers, nuts and/or other toppings you might enjoy. You might also want to use meats like chicken or ham which will also make this a more filling meal. Finally, add your favorite type of salad dressing and you’re done in less than 5 min with a healthy delicious meal or side item.

Roast: One of my favorites to make. All you need is the roast, bag of uncooked carrots, cut up potatoes and an onion. Put all of these in a crock pot with salt, pepper, garlic and a full 32oz of beef broth. Put that on high for about 6 hours. The best part is you will have leftovers for the week with very little effort. This might not seem "quick," but the prep time is short and you certainly don't need to watch it cook! Just set it and forget it until dinner time.
